Cafeteria
Partnership report card Cafeteria
During the fall of 2011 we have implemented a number of new items in the cafeteria in response to student’s requests and in an attempt to increase student participation and happiness with their meal plan. Some of these changes were small and included adding a spice rack in the dining room, additional meat and cheese offerings on the deli bar including a featured Italian cured meat option each week, adding fruit and yogurt parfaits to the breakfast offerings, offering fresh local organic wheatgrass on the salad bar, the addition of a hot dog roller to the grill area and continuing to offer cook to order stations at least twice a week at lunch and dinner.
Some of the new items and concepts that have been implemented this year include Wednesdays “Hot Cookie Bar”. This offering has grown considerably in the first 6 weeks of school from 780 cookies served the first week to 1180 last week. We have found that offering fresh baked cookies on the self-service island has significantly increased the number of bakery items sold throughout the week and has generated a lot of word of mouth and published advertising for our events in the cafeteria.
A second major event this fall was the “Elvis Grill”. This cook to order concept is a combination of several “peanut butter and” sandwiches that are then grilled on a portable flattop griddle during the lunch period. We have received numerous positive comments about this event and we are looking to expand it in the next rotation with Elvis music on the overhead speakers, an Elvis movie playing in Vermeer and perhaps even a visit from “The King” himself.
Another major event this fall includes the addition of a milk shake machine scheduled for Monday, October 10th. This release date will correspond to the Beacon article being released the previous Friday that interviews Chef BJ and discusses some of the shake possibilities and topping that will be available to students. This machine with a variety of toppings will surely be a welcomed addition to the cafeteria offerings this fall. We will have a kickoff event with “Milkshake Monday Night” where Chef BJ will be helping students combine ingredients to make the perfect shake experience and then Chef will follow up Tuesday with an additional guided tour of the shake possibilities. After that the machine will become a permanent addition to the cafeteria offerings.
Another concept offering scheduled to start this fall/winter is the “Hot Cereal Bar”. It will include a variety of hot cereals and fresh and dried fruit, sweet and savory toppings in an effort to increase the number students who chose a hot breakfast to start their day.
Finally we are in the process of bringing in two guest chefs to conduct a “Flavors of Spain” event series for the student, faculty and staff of Northwestern. These guest chefs have recently returned from a trip to Spain and spent time working in kitchens while they were there. A proposed menu of events is outlined below.
These items are in addition to the regular cafeteria offerings and limited time offers that we are currently presenting in the cafeteria.

New items have been added to our menu. Some highlighted items is our new bakery items on the coffee side of the Hub. As well as the safari, a great ice cream treat for anyone who has ever enjoyed eating frosted animal crackers.
We started serving Hot Stuff Food pasta with marinara or alfredo sauces and chicken, italian sausage or beef Monday - Friday. These are now included in our meal exchange with a bread stick and a drink. On sunday nights we started seving dessert pizzas or ice cream swirlies with a choice of cheesecake, brownie pieces and frosted animal crackers as a meal exchange. Since we are only open from 10:00 -11:30 pm, this is a nice way to top off a Sunday evening.
We also had a sign-up day for texting specials with Hot Stuff Food coming down on Thursday Sept. 15th and giving outfree pens & frisbees and offering samples of dessert and regular pizzas. We had approx. 75 students sign up which was a good start for our new program.
